Those in cyclone prone areas could print the "A5 Landscape (24° x 16°)" maps containing their location on A4 paper to enable plotting by torchlight during a cyclone, as the plotting dots are easier to see, and the overlap is such that most locations are on at least 4 maps, giving plenty of plotting room when under a direct cyclone threat from any direction.

Choose maps best suited to printing or screen size

Click on the thumbnail image or the text links below.

All maps are at a scale of 30 pixels per degree, and plotting dots are every 0.1° to enable easy plotting of cyclone positions as given in official Australian Bureau of Meteorology Tropical Cyclone Warnings.

There are 8 sets of maps altogether, including 4 sets optimised for printing, and 3 sets optimised for some standard screen sizes.

The Australian Region Map may be useful as a wall map if you have access a printer that can handle the job.

The printing sets are designed for a minimum size of A3, A4, or A5 paper as indicated if used in well lit situations - print A5 maps on A4 paper for low light situations such as torch light - download to your computer, open in a graphics program, and choose 'fit to page' in your printer settings.

Printing results may vary depending on the quality of your printer and it's associated software.

The screen sets are designed for plotting in windows covering the full desktop area as viewed on some standard screen sizes - download to your computer and open in a drawing or painting program.

I would like to thank Jon Gill, Services Policy Branch, Australian Bureau of Meteorology, for his valuable feedback on the contents of my website, and for sending me a list of place names used by the BoM in their official warnings. The information he provided has been most helpful in preparing the Australian Region Tropical Cyclone Tracking Maps.

Online Map Creation - the Australian map coastlines are based on digital maps drawn by submitting requests to the map drawing page of the OMC website which uses "Generic Mapping Tools (GMT)" to draw your maps and load them into your browser.

Australian Geographic Place Names (Gazetteer) - many of the Australian map location coordinates were found in this Australian Government database.

GEMPAK Weather Station tables - the Meteorological Station coordinates for Willis Island, Queensland, and Giles, Western Australia, were found here.
